A plain guide to peptide care

Words made clear · An explainer

What is a peptide, anyway?

The long names can make this feel like a subject for experts. Start with a few plain meanings, then keep the exact product name in view.

The word peptide tells you about the building blocks.

Think of insulin as one member of the peptide family. A peptide has small building blocks joined in a short chain; proteins use those blocks in longer chains.

FDA · Different kinds of medicines

As of September 26, 2026, United States drug law has no separate approval for products called peptides. The peptide label gives you no answer about a medicine's approval status.

FDA · How it applies drug law to peptide products

For an offer, ask for the name beyond the word peptide. It is much easier to discuss a named product than a broad label.

Check approval for the named product and its purpose.

Medicine review is the job of a federal agency, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The United States has approved semaglutide products named Ozempic and Wegovy. Tirzepatide products with approval include Mounjaro and Zepbound. That is their status as of September 26, 2026.

FDA · Medicine application records

An approval does not cover every product that uses a similar name. Write down the precise medicine name. Is the form being offered a tablet, an injection, or a different type?

FDA · Claims about compounded versions

A made-to-order medicine has a different status.

With compounding, the medicine is prepared for an order. It does not arrive as a finished product made by a drug company.

FDA · What compounding means

A pharmacy preparing a compounded medicine does not give it FDA approval. Compounded medicines remain unapproved as of September 26, 2026.

FDA · Review limits for compounded medicine

For prescription medicine, federal law requires an order before it can be dispensed. That order is the prescription, issued by someone licensed to prescribe.

Keep those questions apart: what the medicine is, whether it has approval, and who has assessed your need for it.
